TradeWinds: Chinese tanker chartering dips in 2024 as Unipec remains fixing king, says Poten

The broker’s tanker research head, Erik Broekhuizen, said: “While Unipec remained on top, its reported cargo volumes and market share dropped slightly for the second year running, illustrating a softening economy and a slowdown in Chinese oil demand growth.”
Another notable performer identified by Broekhuizen was Indian Oil Corp, which rose to become the world’s second-largest VLCC charterer and seventh-largest suezmax charterer. In total, it was the sixth-most active tanker charterer in 2024.
Broekhuizen said “the company’s ascent came as Poland looked for new sources of crude as it dropped pipelined Russian barrels.”
