Tradewinds: Indian Oil’s Star Rises on Poten Tanker Table
11 Jan 2016: “Indian Oil Corp (IOC) leapfrogged on Poten & Partners’ annual league table for charterers of dirty tankers.
“The national oil corporation is now the fourth largest player on the list, surging from the 10th position last year.
“The ranking is based on tonnes of cargo carried in spot fixtures.
270 spot fixtures
“Indian Oil moved nearly 48.8 million tonnes in 2015 in 270 fixtures. It amounted to 3.9% of global dirty petroleum cargoes last year, according to data from the New York shipbroker. It was the second largest VLCC charterer.
“China’s Unipec held onto its position as the world’s largest charterer of dirty tankers, moving more than 168 million tonnes, or 13.4% of the market, in 809 fixtures.
“‘Nobody will be surprised to see that Unipec remained the largest dirty spot charterer in 2015, a position they are unlikely to lose anytime soon, despite slowing oil demand growth in China,’ Poten said in its weekly Tanker Opinion report.
Bahri surges
“National Shipping Corporation of Saudi Arabia (Bahri) jumped to 12th place from 23rd, and trader Trafigura appeared on the list for the first time in the 17th position, the New York-based shipbroker said.
“UK-based oil major BP saw a five-position drop on the list, dropping to 10th place from fifth last year.”
