Trade Winds of Change

Feb 7th, 2025: Global dirty trade routes-reshuffle again in 2024 In 2020, we started a new annual tradition, ranking the Top 20 Global Dirty Trade Routes (covering both crude oil and dirty products) and, in the process, highlighting the routes that changed the most.  Sadly, the company that provided the underlying raw data for this analysis discontinued their service.  Fortunately, we have found a new data partner (Vortexa) and we are able resume these rankings.  However, there are always slight differences in regional definitions and how the data is compiled and processed.  Therefore, we were not able to do the trade route comparison last year, because we would have been comparing the data from two different data sources.  This year, we are resuming the tradition, with consistent 2023 and 2024 data to compare.  As has been the case every year since 2020, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the wars in Europe and the Middle East, tanker trade flows have been changing significantly, and the year 2024 was no exception.  The overall volume of global trade does not appear to have changed that much.  Global transport volumes of crude oil and dirty petroleum products are slightly lower in 2024 than in 2023, both in terms of TonMiles per Day (-2.3%) and as expressed in Barrels per Day (-0.8%).  However, as is often the case, the changes are happening below the surface, on individual routes.
