The Wall Street Journal: Officials Take Steps to Ease NE Fuel Supply Crunch
“Government officials took steps Friday to allow more gasoline to be shipped into the storm-plagued Northeast. But experts said widespread power outages hitting gas stations and fuel terminals are the main problem. In separate announcements, the U.S. government issued a temporary waiver allowing non-U.S. oil tankers to transport fuel from the Gulf Coast to Northeast, while New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo waived a tax on tankers docking in storm- battered New York harbor. . . . Still, any relief from the Jones Act suspension isn’t likely to be felt for days, experts said. Jeff McGee, head of research at New York shipbroker Poten and Partners, estimated it would take up to 10 days for a ship to be routed from the Gulf Coast to New York. ‘I don’t think there will be a tsunami of gasoline coming because of the Jones Act waiver, but I think there will be some product moving,’ Mr. McGee said.”
