The Biggest Losers

5 May 2017:  It is usually more pleasant to write about growing business prospects and new trade routes, but sometimes it makes sense to reflect on the other side of the coin.  Highlighting some of the trades that have declined year-over-year can help explain the overall changes in tons and ton-miles as well as the (regional) shifts from one segment to the other.  In this weekly opinion we will review some of these developments, look at the factors driving them and try to determine whether they are likely to be permanent or temporary.
