Déjà vu All Over Again
Top Reported Dirty Spot Charterers for 2023*
Our annual rankings in 2023 showed few surprises. The usual suspects topped the lists. Unipec – to nobody’s surprise – remains No. 1, followed by several of the supermajors: Shell, ExxonMobil, Total and Chevron. There were three new entrants in the top 20, but these were also well-known companies: Glencore (14), GS Caltex (15) and Phillips66 (20).
Compared to 2022, Equinor, Reliance and Hyundai dropped out of the top 20. While China’s Unipec was still the dominant player in the tanker market, they moved 6.8% less cargo in 2023 versus 2022 (204.7 Mn MT versus 219.7 Mn MT) and concluded 50 fewer fixtures (881 in 2023 versus 931 in 2022). On a global basis, the total reported spot cargo volumes were up 3.6%, but the number of fixtures were down by 300 (3.8%).
