The Alaskan crude oil spill in 1989 that spawned the era of double-hulled tankers has also embroiled ExxonMobil in legal entanglements that continue to this day. Now, like a sense of anxiousness carried by a thick fog, the tanker industry world-wide uneasily awaits the U.S. Supreme Court’s judgment of whether or not punitive damages are warranted for this tragic spill of oil.
