Blaming a product for a price spike or supply shortage in its associated markets in order to undermine its popular appeal seems to be a common technique employed by its detractors. Take for instance the recent clamor that the rapidly escalating production of so-called renewable biofuels is, in part, responsible for the recent steep rise in global food prices for the world’s population.
