Renewable Power Projects Compete with LNG for Financing
Power projects based on renewable energy sources have become increasingly competitive with LNG-to-power projects, and unsubsidized renewables have won tenders for power purchase agreements around the world. But gas-fired plants can also partner with the renewables sector. Not only do gas-fired power plants emit fewer greenhouse gases than coal-fired units, but they can be ramped up more quickly, allowing them to supply back-up power when renewables are faced with interruptions if sunshine is not strong enough, or wind speeds are too low or too high to allow continuous operation. With the renewables mix in power increasing as many countries try to reduce pollution, gas is expected to be a beneficiary.
