Spanish LPG imports were up by 15% in 1Q 2019 from the same period in 2018 due to lower refinery production and higher demand in the petrochemical sector with favorable margins for cracking LPG compared with naphtha, a trend that has been driving higher LPG consumption since last year. Overall LPG demand in other sectors has been falling in recent years (except for autogas); however, imports are still necessary to supplant sharp declines in domestic refinery production. Growing demand in the petrochemical and autogas sectors will continue to drive demand and imports higher in coming years.
