LNG in World Markets: German FSRU Buildout Puts Spotlight on Delayed Onshore Import Terminals

Germany will see additional floating storage and regasification (FSRU) capacity by the end of this year which is shining a spotlight on activity at the three proposed onshore LNG terminals. One has already begun construction but the developers of the two delayed schemes are still determined to advance their import projects against the current backdrop of capacity underutilization across Europe. State-owned Deutsche Energy Terminals (DET) is targeting new FSRU capacity at Stade and Wilhelmshaven before this winter. The FSRU Energos Force, with a regasification. capacity of up to 750 MMcf/d will be deployed at Stade and the 500 MMcf/d capacity FSRU Excelerate Excelsior at Wilhelmshaven. DETis also working on a new model for capacity auctions at its existing 750 MMcf/d Brunsbuttel and 750 MMcf/d Wilhelmshaven FSRU operations after receiving no bids in its latest auction for allocations in July. Around 85% of DET’s current FSRU terminal capacity was used in the first half of this year, predominately supplied with LNG from the US.
