Kurdish Tightrope

20 Oct 2017; On September 25, 2017, the Kurdish Autonomous Region, governed by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in Iraq voted in a (non-binding) referendum for independence.  The referendum was opposed by Baghdad, by neighboring countries Turkey and Iran, as well as by other countries.  The reaction of the Iraqi government as well as the neighboring countries could threaten the crude oil production and exports from the KRG controlled area, which accounts for about 10%-15% of the total Iraqi exports.
