ISPS and the US Coast Guard – On a Collision Course for July 1st?
Post-September 11th, the shipping industry, like many others, came up with its own contingency plan to thwart potential acts of terrorism on ships and terminals and July 1st is the due date for compliance with the provisions. The International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code came into being after the Maritime Safety Committee within the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met with 108 national governments for a year to design the program. In the US, the code was adopted into law as the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002.
