16 Feb 2018: The tanker market of the end of 2017 and the beginning of 2018 will probably be remembered as one of the worst in recent history. The fact that the tanker market of the 1980s was much worse (and probably lasted longer) is of little consolation to shipowners experiencing earnings that regularly do not cover vessel operating expenses, let alone corporate overhead and financing costs. Within the tanker markets, the product carriers appear to be doing slightly better than crude carriers, but even in those markets there is little to write home about.
