Bloomberg: Panama Canal Expansion May Spur U.S.- Asia LNG Exports from 2016
26 Apr 2015: “Work to make the Panama Canal wider and deeper may boost U.S. LNG exports to Asia, as larger ships will be able to use the channel. The expanded canal, which cuts 11 days off a trip to Asia from the Gulf of Mexico, will be able to handle 88% of existing LNG tankers, up from 8.6%. It may open by April 2016 after a two-year delay and cost overruns. U.S. exporters, which compete with Australia, have signed deals to supply 65 million tons, or 90 bcm, of LNG to mostly Asian buyers, based on Poten & Partners data.”
