BI Webinar – Trump Tariffs Raise Concerns for LNG Industry | April 16
The latest tariffs announced by the Trump Administration have roiled global markets and raised concerns about economic growth and LNG project development. The concerns range from the impact of US tariffs on imports of steel, liquefaction modules and other LNG project inputs, to the possibility of retaliatory tariffs on US LNG and worst of all, the prospect a trade war could trigger a global recession and the many negative consequences that entails.
Join Poten & Partners as our analysts discuss how the US tariffs – and the retaliatory moves that are expected to follow – are likely to affect the global LNG business. Some of the topics we’ll tackle include:
- How will US tariffs affect US project development and the competitiveness of US LNG. Will tariffs on imported steel and aluminum and other goods and products increase costs of US projects?
- How will European LNG buyers react to the tariffs? Will the EU succeed in buying long-term LNG from the US to reduce tariffs? Will the trade tensions encourage European buyers to look to Qatar and even Russia for LNG supplies at the expense of US producers?
- Asia Pac importers like India and Vietnam had been considering reducing existing tariffs on US LNG. Will the latest levies prompt them to back away from these moves? China has imposed 34% retaliatory tariffs on all US products, including LNG. How will Chinese buyers of US LNG respond?
- Will higher US tariffs prompt potential offtakers from Japan, South Korea and other Asia Pac countries to delay long-term US purchases?
- Will the tariffs lead to slower economic growth globally and what would the consequences be? A recession could reduce feedgas prices in the US, but it could also reduce global demand for LNG.
- Tariffs could also create an opportunity for other LNG project developers and trading houses. Who stands to benefit from the uncertainty?
