Recent figures indicating a cooling of Chinese growth have generated fresh concern over the health of the global economy. The tanker market in particular has been banking on a rally of non-OECD petroleum demand, seeing projected increases in Chinese petroleum consumption as one of the few rays of light in this year’s dark market. However, even in the face of possible moderation, shifting trade patterns and expansion of overall Chinese involvement in petroleum spot trade still leaves potential for development of ton mile demand in the coming years.
