Lloyd’s List: Nor-Shipping 2015: Owners are Haemorrhaging Money on Idle LNG Ships
04 Jun 2015: “The situation is made worse by a new wave of vessels that have been ordered speculatively, meaning they are currently being built without a charter contract in place. There are around 25 of these speculative newbuildings in the global orderbook, said Poten & Partners analyst Amokeye Adede.
“No more new ships need to be ordered until 2018, according to Ms Adede. ‘The market doesn’t actually need any new ships for a few years.’ By around the first quarter of 2018, demand for vessels should be slightly greater than supply of vessels, so it would be viable to order new vessels at that time, she forecast. ‘If nobody orders ships over next few years we should be fine, but in practice it doesn’t work that way.’”
