Index, Index on the Wall, What Will Decide a Rise or Fall?
It has been said that what goes up will usually come down. In the case of stock indexes, the measurement of that theory is calculated in numerous factors. For example, Poten’s Tanker Index (PTI), started in 1996, is based on weekly-assessed tanker rates for 14 of the most popular trade routes for the principal ship sizes. Since its inception it has been used to measure the health of the tanker market. Another index by Lazard Freres measures the health of stocks of nine large tanker-owning companies. Both indices were set at an index value of 100 for tanker stocks and Worldscale rates in the beginning of 1996.
