Can This Ever Work ?
In a press release for its Annual Energy Outlook, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) candidly acknowledges that the United States is unlikely to meet long‐term biofuels blending targets. Significant doubts also remain as to whether or not the United States will even be able to produce the level of biofuels mandated for blending next year. Moreover, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is taking extra time to consider raising the allowable ethanol gasoline blending percentage from the current limit of 10 to 15 percent. Also, a recent report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) explores biofuels’ detrimental impact on water supplies. Finally, it seems that a long‐overdue reevaluation of the nation’s biofuels policy is underway.
