Tradewinds: Angelicoussis Unfazed
“On the sidelines of an LNG forum in New York the chief executive of Angelicoussis Shipping Group said he doesn’t feel the need to beef up security. ‘I’m really not concerned,’ he told TradeWinds. ‘My daughter spends a great deal of time in Greece. If I was worried, this wouldn’t be the case.’
“Angelicoussis argued that private shipowners who keep a low profile face far less risk than those who run public companies and relish the spotlight. ‘If you are flashy and go around showing off your money, yes, there is a risk that something like this is going to happen,’ he continued before pointing out that police intervened before the attack against Marinakis could be carried out.
“Evangelos Marinakis is the chairman of Capital Product Partners, a publicly-traded operator based in Athens, and president of the Olympiacos football club. In addition, the tycoon recently mounted a successful foray into local politics. With nearly 100 tankers, bulkers and LNG carriers to his name Angelicoussis boasts one of the largest private fleets in the world. TradeWinds caught up with the tycoon at an LNG roundtable hosted by Poten & Partners and Bloomberg.
“When pressed about whether he would take Maran Gas or any of its affiliates public at some point in the future during a question-and-answer session he indicated that this was an unlikely scenario but didn’t rule out the possibility altogether. ‘I can find capital, internally generated, and competitive bank facilities,’ he explained. ‘I can’t say being private is the right thing, or being public is the wrong thing. I cannot tell you what will happen five or ten years from now, maybe one day we will need to, maybe we won’t.'”
