Seatrade Maritime News: Uncertainties abound in global LNG trades

Gas shipments from the States were the subject of a recent webinar from Poten & Partners titled “Trump Tariffs Raise Concerns for LNG Industry”. In the discussion, moderator Jason Feer, Poten’s global head of business intelligence, suggested that: “These tariffs have introduced a significant level of uncertainty… “,explaining the start/stop nature of the levies. He then went on to detail possible impacts on imports, saying: “…we are also looking at some fairly significant tariffs on imported steel and aluminium…and I think that these are some of the most significant impacts that we are going to see, in the short run, on US LNG.”
The Poten webinar delved into potential changes in trade flows for gas, citing numerous questions related to the tariffs, but also to broader geopolitical undercurrents. In the past month, an increasing number of cargoes that would have gone to China have been re-sold into Europe. Poten analyst Irwin Yeo, who covers the Asia-Pacific region, expressed the concerns he’s heard from clients, “Are these tariffs going to be temporary?” or are they part of a slide into longer-term protectionist policy?
