LNG in World Markets Mid Month: Europe Proposes Storage Regulations Extension to 2027

The storage regulations, which have set mandatory targets for member states since being introduced in 2022 on energy security grounds following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, were scheduled to expire at the end of this year.
The proposed extension would ensure the re-stocking of depleted underground storage would be done in a “coordinated manner” and ensure the stability of the European gas market, the Commission said on March 5. It currently mandates that 90% of EU storage be filled by Nov.1. Last November the Brussels-based executive arm of the EU also set a series of intermediate storage targets, including around 30% by May 1.
