Chinese-Australian trade tensions have surfaced recently with China imposing sanctions on Australian coal imports, among other goods. LNG has not been affected so far. There are concerns that the sanctions may be expanded to include LNG. But, given China’s dependence on LNG imports to meet growing gas demand and Chinese reliance on Australia such policy actions are unlikely. On a monthly basis, Australia exports roughly 40% of its LNG to China. Australian LNG accounts for half of Chinese imports. Australian supply is low-cost, and reliable given its proximity to the Chinese market.
