The Cost of Technology
6 February 2017: LNG carriers’ propulsion technology has changed dramatically over the last decade. From the early days of LNG till the mid 2000’s Steam Turbine (ST) vessels were the prevalent option. By 2010 a new vessel type arrived equipped with more fuel-efficient Dual/Tri-Fuel Diesel Electric (D/TFDE) engines, increased carrying capacity to approximately 162,000 m3, and membrane containment systems that reduced the amount of LNG boiled-off daily during transit from approximately 0.15% to 0.10%.
