Production from the giant offshore Shah Deniz field has left the country awash with gas, and makes the nation a prime candidate to serve as an anchor supplier for a handful of proposed export pipelines.

Although demand in the traditional markets of Asia is on the rise post recession, long haul voyages from the Atlantic to the Far East accounted for only 3.1 MMt from 51 cargoes, a drop of a little under 0.5 MMt from last year. This trend could soon reverse as Asian demand picks up.

Prompt prices at the UK’s National Balancing Point reached their highest level in 18 months during July closing at $7.63/MMBtu on the 13th. However, prices took a hammering late in the month following the restart of the last two mega trains that had been shut down for maintenance in Qatar.
